7 Tips for Successful Job Interviews

The job interview may be the most difficult part of the hiring process, but also one of the most important. It is vital that you are well prepared before your interview, even if that means practicing answering the more difficult interview questions beforehand. This helps you feel more confident and comfortable, and reduce some of your pre-interview nervousness.

Research the Company

If you don’t already know everything there is to know about the company, do your research. Start by finding their business website and browsing the different sections. Learn their history and background, who their executives are and what their mission statement is. Find out what service or products they provide and any type of reputation they have. Questions may come up during the interview, and it pays to have your research done.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Don’t just get up 30 minutes before your interview without a second thought. Make sure you prepare as soon as you know about the interview. If it is last minute, you don’t have much of a choice, but most interviews are scheduled for several days or a week ahead of time. This gives you enough time to drive to the company and make sure you know how to get there, arranging transportation and making sure your interview suit is cleaned and pressed. Have your belongings, such as your resume and application, ready to go the night before so you’re not scrambling.

Practice Answering Questions

If you are someone who isn’t great with oral presentations, you might not be the best at answering interview questions. It can be hard when you aren’t prepared, so try practicing answering common interview questions before the interview. It is better to practice in front of someone else to get used to talking with an audience.

Be Prepared for a Phone Interview

Many companies choose to complete a phone screening that is similar to an interview but over the phone. Once you apply for a job, be prepared to answer some interview questions over the phone. If it is scheduled beforehand, this gives you the opportunity to make sure you don’t have any distractions during the call.

Say Thank You

Always show your appreciation for being called in to an interview. Say a simple thank you when exiting your interview and send correspondence in the form of a simple thank you later shortly after the interview. This is a great way to follow up and keep you in the interviewer’s mind.


It is normal to feel nervous during an interview, but being overly fidgety can hurt you more than help you. Try to relax as much as possible, by preparing ahead of time and asking the interviewer if you did not hear them the first time. Don’t rush into answering questions because you feel like they need a response immediately.

Arrive on Time

Never arrive late to an interview, but don’t be too early either. Try to arrive about 10-15 minutes before the time of the interview. This gives you some extra time just in case you hit traffic and lets you fill out an application and get settled before the interview begins.
